60 61 PILGRIM vine - Vitis Vinifera The PILGRIM vine is an Uhudler – a vine that was re-imported from California after the great phylloxera epidemic in Europe at the end of the 19th century. As the spread was mainly possible through direct vegetative propagation, all European wine cultures were able to recover at the beginning of the 20th century. Due to envy and resentment in the 1920s, the cultivation of Uhudler was pushed back. It served more as a "house drink" for the winegrowers. These direct producer wines were later called Uhudler, a name that originated in southern Burgenland at the end of 1950. Uhudler It was not until the 1970s that the cultivation of Uhudler was officially authorised. The variety is an "ISABELLA". The grapes are large, loose and shouldered, the berries are slightly oval, quite large and dark purple in skin colour with blue-black ripening. The flesh is typically firm and juicy. The grape is suitable as a table grape and is good for eating. The flavour is described as ranging from wild berry to nutty-tart. The leaves are large and white tomentose on the underside. Characteristically, the berries do not ripen at the same time, so that a bunch can bear green and fully ripe berries at the same time. Care: This vine is easy to grow and care for – it doesn't need any spraying – just patience and a "green thumb". You should decide in good time where the vine should be planted and what shape it should take. Either as an upright growing vine, or trained upwards and then becoming a pergola. In any case, a support stake is recommended as a climbing aid. Planting: The grafting point (lower bulge) should protrude at least approx. 2 cm from the soil; plant and water – and allow to grow. Only prune in the following year – in February – so that e.g. 3-5 eyes remain for budding. "Wine gladdens the heart of man." Ps 104, 15 The vines were grafted by the School of Viticulture Krems, a PILGRIM school since 2006/07, cultivated by the Ganger nursery, a PILGRIM friend company, and are offshoots of Dr Johann Hisch's vine anda personal gift from PILGRIM. www.pilgrim.at Images © Johann Hisch, 2012 2006/07
