100 101 Dr Alexander Kucera Principal School Association Institute Sta. Christiana, Frohsdorf 21 (sic!) years beeing a PILGRIM-School We have been a PILGRIM school since 2003. Over the past two decades, we have carried out countless projects in connection with PILGRIM or inspired by PILGRIM. We have compiled a representative selection of our school's activities from the last two school years, which we present below in connection with the 7 goals of Laudato Si’ and the SDGs. The social, ecological and economic dimensions of sustainability are reflected in the projects and can be categorised using the SDGs and Laudato Si’ icons. As a private Catholic school, the spiritual dimension is also present in everything we do. We have received the mission of the Sisters of Sta. Christiana "to make God’s merciful love tangible and perceptible". For us, this relates to how we treat each other as well as how we treat the world in which we live. We also want to make God’s love perceptible and tangible in our relationship with creation. In line with our mission of training and educating the pupils and students entrusted to us, we see ourselves as an overall organisation committed to acting as a role model. The school of today is the future of tomorrow. The way we organise our school today and work and live in it with our pupils will be the future. New heating system The ageing oil heating system was dismantled and a groundwater heat pump system was installed to heat the 5,000 square metres of school space. A gas condensing boiler was also installed to cover peak loads for low temperatures in winter and as an emergency unit. With this ecological heating system, 67,000 litres of heating oil and thus approx. 208 tonnes of CO2 are now saved every year. This corresponds to approx. 2,000,000 fewer car kilometres of CO2 emissions per year! Cooking in the "Gruft" In keeping with this motto, some pupils and teachers made their way to the "Zweite Gruft" in Vienna's 18th district to cook a vegetable and meat stew from the food they had brought with them. Workshop "The story of my mobile phone" In cooperation with the climate alliance community of Lanzenkirchen, three classes worked with Südwind NÖ to address issues surrounding mobile phones. The history of this everyday object, which pretty much everyone has in their pocket, was made conscious and comprehensible. The mobile phone has its roots all over the world. The raw materials come from South America, Africa or Asia, the assembly takes place mainly in China, and it is being used all over the world. However, the "afterlife", i.e. proper recycling at local authority waste collection centres but also illegal forms of disposal, which often take place in Africa, were also discussed in this workshop. All these questions were addressed and answered in the Südwind workshop "The story of my mobile phone". The pupils had the opportunity to dismantle mobile phones, discuss working conditions and rights and learn about the actual production costs and routes. This small everyday object was used as the basis for a critical journey around the world together with Südwind. Vital4brain - Health promotion by pupils for pupils Vital4brain is an exercise programme that takes place at regular intervals directly in the classroom for a few minutes at the beginning of the lesson. Six pupils have been trained as Vital4brain peer coaches. They visit each class once a week. They invest a great deal of commitment, time and energy to design programmes that are varied and enjoyable – humour also plays an important role here. Image © School Association Institute Sta.
